Sperm Donation

Why should you donate your sperm?

  • Donor sperm in Australia is currently in extremely short supply.
  • Some couples are unable to achieve a pregnancy due to male infertility. Male infertility has many causes, including genetic, infectious, and physical damage.
  • To give single women the opportunity to make their dreams of motherhood a reality.
  • To provide women in a same-sex relationships the opportunity to become parents.
  • To assist patients who have already conceived children via donor sperm and are keen to repeat the process for their child’s sibling/s.
  • To meet the steadily increasing demand for donor sperm as a result of scientific advances in recent years, now allowing IVF clinics to help more patients.
  • To meet the increasing demand as a result of a greater acceptance in society today regarding the use of donor sperm.

Here are a few important things to know if you're considering sperm donation with Fertility North:

  • Reimbursement - In Australia, the donation of reproductive tissue must be altruistic. It is against the law for someone to profit from the donation of sperm. However, we realise that you may be out of pocket in undertaking this great gift; therefore, to cover reasonable expenses, you will be reimbursed for any out of pocket costs you may have incurred including proven loss of income to attend the clinic, and/ or via submission of receipts for such items as reimbursements for parking.
  • Costs - All appointments and blood tests associated with your donation occur at no cost to you.
  • Your rights - You have the right to cancel your donation at any time.  This right expires only when your gametes have been used in a fertilisation procedure, at which time the donor recipient gains legal right over the donated gametes.
  • Counselling – Two one-hour counselling sessions with an Australian and New Zealand Infertility Counsellors Association (ANZICA) counsellor are required, both prior to and following a 6 month ‘cooling off’ period.  These sessions are to discuss issues specific to the donation of your gametes. Your first counselling session initiates the 6 month cooling off period.  Your specialist/doctor appointment, initial blood screenings and donations can all occur within this timeframe. The second counselling session can take place anytime following the expiry of your cooling off period.

  • Up to 10 donations are permitted (not including your first sample for analysis), with a maximum donation of twice per week, over 5 weeks.

Please contact the Donor Coordinator on (08) 9301 1075 or email donor@fertilitynorth.com.au if you have any questions, queries or concerns.

Egg Donation

Are you thinking about donating eggs? Here are a few important things to know about the process:

  • Reimbursement - You will be reimbursed for any out of pocket costs you may incur including proven loss of income to attend the clinic, and/ or upon submission of receipts for such items as parking, and travel, utilising predetermined rates considered appropriate by law.  Unemployed individuals or homemakers that utilise day care or babysitting services in order to attend donor related appointments will be reimbursed following the supply of a valid receipt.  All donors are reimbursed 50% following their TVOA and 50% following the return of the final blood screening results six months after their final donation.
  • Costs - All appointments and blood tests associated with your donation occur at no cost to you.
  • Your rights - You have the right to cancel your donation at any time.  This right expires only when your gametes have been used in a fertilisation procedure, at which time the donor recipient gains legal right over the donated material.
  • Counselling – Two one hour counselling sessions with an Australian and New Zealand Infertility Counsellors Association (ANZICA) counsellor are required, both prior to and following a 6 month ‘cooling off’ period.  These sessions are to discuss issues specific to the donation of your gametes. Your first counselling session initiates the 6 month cooling off period.  Your specialist/doctor appointment, initial blood screenings and donation can all occur within this timeframe. The second counselling session can take place anytime following the expiry of your cooling off period.

  • TVOA -  TVOA stands for Trans-vaginal Oocyte Aspiration, which is the egg collection procedure. In preparation for your TVOA  at least 2 ultrasounds and approximately 6 blood tests will be required over a 10-14 day period, which will mean multiple visits to the clinic.  Your Fertility Nurse will guide you through this phase and attempt to limit disruptions as much as possible. Please note that preparation for your TVOA involves the home use of some injectable medications.  You will be trained in their use during your nurse consult.
